BYU Ballet Showcase plans concerts March 21-22

The Brigham YoungUniversity Ballet Showcase will present a collection of choreography ranging fromthe classic pas de deux to the new and jazzy on Friday and Saturday, March 21and 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theater, 166 Richards Building.

Tickets are $5 and are availableat the Fine Arts Ticket Office or by calling (801) 422-4322.

Ballet Showcase Companydirector Janalyn Memmott has selected some of her favorite pieces ofchoreography to include in the performance. Along with two of her newest works,the showcase will include pieces by faculty members Marsha Russell and LisaStoddard that showcase the diversity of the dancers’ repertoire and talent.

Several students’ workswill be showcased alongside the faculty pieces. Alicia McCleve’s neoclassical "Happiness in Perspective" is set to traditional music fromNorway, while Krislyn Wessel approaches the heavier theme of the challengesfaced in the search for self in "Podero di Baletto."

Professional guestartists Traci Finch and Nathan Cottam, former members of BYU Theatre Ballet,will perform choreographer August Bournonville’s famous "Flower Festival" pas de deux. Finch trainedin Denmark last summer in the Bournonville technique and will perform the pieceas the culmination of her research.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
