BYU announces new deadlines for tuition and fees payments

Beginning Fall Semester 2007, the deadline for payment of tuition and fees at Brigham Young University will be seven calendar days prior to the first day of class. Currently, the deadline is the second day of class.

“We believe this new deadline will help our students arrive at BYU better prepared financially to begin school,” said Jay Hanson, director of BYU Student Financial Services. Hanson notes that in the past some students have started school with insufficient funds, which too often resulted in these students having to drop out midway through the semester or spend unnecessary time dealing with financial issues.

“Our plan is to encourage students to prepare financially before they ever come to BYU,” he said. “In so doing, students will greatly reduce the time spent on financial concerns, which can significantly interfere with a student’s studies.”

Failure to meet the new deadline will result in holds being placed on students’ accounts, restricting their ability to add or change classes. However, if a student can demonstrate adequate approved financial aid, the hold on registration will not be applied

The new policy also provides for a final payment deadline. Class registrations will be deleted if payment of tuition and fees is not received before midnight of the day following the add deadline.

The university will continue to make short-term loans available to assist students in meeting the tuition and fees deadlines. These short-term loans are due approximately three-quarters of the way through a semester or term.

“In all cases, before starting a semester or term, students need to realistically assess their financial situation,” said Hanson, “making sure that they have the financial resources to cover their tuition and fees before school even begins.”
