BYU alumnus James Margetts to return for piano recital March 3

James Margetts, an alumnus of Brigham Young University, will return Saturday, March 3, to give a piano concert in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be free.

The program will begin with Chopin’s Barcarolle in F sharp Major, Op. 60 and move to Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op.101. After intermission, he will continue with “Images, Book 1” by Debussy and “Fantasien,” Op. 116 by Brahms.

Margetts is an assistant professor of piano at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where he teaches courses in applied piano, piano studio operations and music literature. He is a candidate for the doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music in Ohio. His principal teachers include Frank Weinstock, Michael Chertock, James Tocco, Paul Pollei and Melba Hoyt.

He has appeared as both soloist and collaborative artist at venues across the United States, and last year made his international debut at a conference in Mexico. A recording, “Four American Horn Sonatas,” with Laurence Lowe, French horn, was released by Tantara Records in 1999.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
