Bonnie D. Parkin to conduct BYU Commencement Exercises Aug. 11

Activities will include dedication of remodeled Brimhall Building

Bonnie D. Parkin, general president of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a member of the Brigham Young University Board of Trustees, will conduct and speak at BYU's August 2005 Commencement Exercises Thursday, Aug. 11, at 4 p.m. in the Marriott Center.

Elder Richard G. Scott, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve of the Church, will preside over the ceremonies. Elder Cecil O. Samuelson, president of BYU and a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church, along with BYU Alumni Association president Carr C. Krueger and graduating senior Sachiko Jensen, will also speak during the exercises.

Music will be provided by the University Chorale under the direction of Jim Wilcock and Leah Tarrant.

Both KBYU-TV (Channel 11) and KBYU-FM (89.1) will broadcast the exercises live.

The academic processional to the Marriott Center for graduates, representatives of the BYU administration, faculty and staff will leave the Abraham Smoot Building parking areas on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Most campus offices will close on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

This year in conjunction with commencement, the recently renovated George H. Brimhall Building, the new home of the BYU Communications Department, will be dedicated Thursday at 1 p.m in 140 Brimhall Building. Elder John H. Groberg of the Presidency of the Seventy of the Church will preside at the dedication and offer the dedicatory prayer. The public is welcome to attend.

The Air Force ROTC program will commission four graduating students Friday, Aug. 12, at 3 p.m. in the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center. The Army ROTC program commissioned two graduating students in June and July and will not be holding any ceremonies in August.

A "Meet the President" event, where President Samuelson and his wife Sharon will greet graduates and their parents, will also be held Friday, Aug. 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Museum of Art.

Individual College Convocation assignments for Friday are as follows:

From 8 to 10:30 a.m.:

  • Humanities in the Marriott Center

  • David O. McKay School of Education in the Smith Fieldhouse

  • David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium

  • Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom

  • Fine Arts and Communications in the de Jong Concert Hall From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.:

  • Family, Home and Social Sciences in the Marriott Center

  • Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering and Technology in the Smith Fieldhouse

  • Nursing in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium From 2 to 4:30 p.m.:

  • Marriott School of Management in the Marriott Center

  • Health and Human Performance in the Smith Fieldhouse

  • School of Family Life in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom From 5 to 7:30 p.m.:

  • Biology and Agriculture in the Marriott Center Graduates and their guests are asked to refrain from using cellular phones during the Commencement Exercises and College Convocations.
