Beverly Chico to discuss symbolism in religious headwear Dec. 1 at BYU

Brigham Young University’s Department of Theatre and Media Arts welcomes hat collector Beverly Chico for a forum presentation about symbolism in Jewish, Muslim and Christian headwear Thursday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Nelke Theatre of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Chico will also address several classes on Friday, Dec. 2, in D-112 of the Harris Fine Arts Center. She will discuss the evolution of turbans at 9 a.m., the evolution of crowns at 10 a.m. and women’s fashion in headwear at 11 a.m.

All lectures are free and open to the public.

With more than 500 hats in her possession, Chico has made hat collecting a lifelong obsession. She owns hats from many parts of the world as well as different time periods. Her oldest hat dates back 400 years.

She said she has collected most of her hats by merely talking to people. However, she has had to smuggle a military hat out of Russia and travel 1,000 miles north of the Arctic Circle for a sorcerer’s hat.

A native of Boston, Chico has lived in the Denver area for the past 30 years where she teaches humanities and history at Regis University and Metropolitan State College.
