Benjamin M. Ogles named dean of BYU College of Family, Home, Social Sciences

Academic Vice President Brent W. Webb recently announced that Benjamin M. Ogles, dean of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, has accepted the appointment as dean of the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences at Brigham Young University.

The former chair and director of clinical training at the Department of Psychology at Ohio University, Ogles will begin his five-year term as dean on July 1. He replaces Dean David Magleby, who will be going on a leave of absence to the University of Michigan for the 2011-2012 academic year to work on research and course development.

“Dr. Ogles received strong support from the faculty, from the search committee and from the BYU administration and Board of Trustees,” said Webb in a letter to college faculty. “He has a wonderful combination of experiences that prepare him well for this new responsibility.  He is looking forward to continue developing the excellent service the college renders to its students, to the university and to its disciplines.”

The search committee had a difficult task because there were several other very qualified candidates within the college,” said Webb. “I am also deeply grateful to Dean Magleby who has provided extraordinary service and has brought remarkable insights and skills to our university councils.”

The BYU College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences is composed of departments that study patterns of human behavior from diverse disciplinary approaches. Teaching and scholarship rely on social scientific methodology to learn about human behavior and human societies — their histories, organization, governments and economies.
