Baritone Arden Hopkin to give BYU faculty recital Feb. 5

Arden Hopkin, head of vocal studies at the Brigham Young University School of Music, will present a faculty artist recital of vocal chamber music, “The Friends of Arden,” Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free

Accompanied by various members of the instrumental faculty from the School of Music, Hopkin will perform the Cantata 82 by J.S. Bach, “Aires de la Tierra” by Tulio Peramo and “Four Psalms” by Howard Hanson.

The name of the recital is both a reference to the magical Forest of Arden in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” a place where poets and musicians would seek out the Muses who lived there, and a play on Hopkin’s name.

Hopkin has been coordinating the vocal division at BYU since 1998. He teaches studio voice and vocal pedagogy in addition to serving as a clinician across the country and internationally. He earned a doctoral degree from the Eastman School of Music, a master’s degree from the University of North Texas and a bachelor’s degree from BYU.
