Applications accepted for BYU Young Musicians Academy

The Young Musicians Academy, a part of the School of Music at Brigham Young University, is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 season. The Young Musicians Academy offers music classes to children ages 20 months to 5 years in a non-structured environment.

Courses consist of 22 sessions spanning Sept. 5, 2009, to April 10, 2010. Tuition is $250 per child. Applications are available at the School of Music Web site, music.byu.edu, or by visiting C550 Harris Fine Arts Center. Class sizes are limited.

On Saturday mornings children and their parents are invited to learn and discover music. They are given the opportunity to explore a variety of musical instruments, recordings, songs and musical toys. Parents and teachers play with their children and help them to discover ways to make music, said Susan Kenney of the BYU School of Music faculty.

Newsletters are also provided in the course. They help parents understand child development, music development, the effects of music on the brain and much more. Newsletters also provide music activities that parents can do with their children at home.

“The academy’s philosophy is that the first five years of life are the most important for building the structure of a musical life and that parents and family play a vital role in music teaching,” Kenney said.

More information can be found by contacting Susan Kenney at susan_kenney@byu.edu or 801-422-3011.
