Annual Rex Lee Run March 24 to honor cancer fighters

The Brigham Young University Cancer Awareness Group will raise money and increase public awareness of cancer with the 12th annual Rex Lee Run, to take place Saturday, March 24, at 9 a.m. in Provo.

Registration prior to the event includes a $15 fee for the 5k run and $20 for the 10k. On the day of the event, the fees will be $20 and $25 and must be paid by 8:30 a.m. More information is available online at rexleerun.byu.edu.

The race will begin outside BYU’s Outdoor Track, located just south of LaVell Edwards Stadium. Participants may walk or run the circular course. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in each age bracket. Afterward, all participants can enjoy food, music and the chance to win airline tickets, dining certificates, movie passes and other prizes in a random drawing.

Those interested may also contribute to the cause by “honoring a cancer fighter.” With a donation, a runner will participate in the event wearing a “Courage in the War Against Cancer” badge with the name of the donator’s friend or loved one.

The event began in 1996 after then-BYU President Rex E. Lee passed away from lymphoma. In honor of the avid runner, cancer survivors held the first run a few weeks after his passing. All proceeds from the race go to fund cancer research at the BYU Cancer Research Center.
