Advertising student finalist in international award show

A Brigham Young University advertising student recently received an award from what is widely recognized as the premier international advertising award show for college students.

Hunter Sebresos was one of nearly 1,000 students worldwide to submit ads to the largest-ever One Show annual college competition, and, as one of 58 finalists, he received an award of merit for his work, which was displayed in a Madison Avenue gallery and will be published in the annual One Show awards book.

“The One Show is among the most prestigious of all competitions honoring creativity in the advertising profession,” said Dave Newbold, president of Richter 7, a Salt Lake City ad agency. “It is a rare and treasured honor to have your work featured in their annual publication of the industry's premier ads. To have Hunter receive a merit award says a lot about his talent level and about the BYU advertising program.”

This year’s competition called for students to design ads that would draw attention to the promise of hybrid vehicles, and Sebresos submitted ads showing gas caps surrounded by spiderwebs, moths and wasps, with tag lines such as, “A lot can happen between fill-ups.”

“He communicates the benefit of a hybrid car very quickly with a powerful visual and a twist,” said Jeff Sheets, director of the Communications Department’s Advanced Advertising Lab. “It takes something that you’re familiar with and then twists it in a way that people get it. It quickly conveys that you don’t have to use gas every day like most people do.”

Sebresos is now working as an intern, along with three other BYU advertising students, at Miami’s Crispin Porter + Bogusky, a nationally recognized ad agency.

“There are literally dozens of awards competitions that attempt to highlight good work in the ad industry,” said Brian Rasmussen, managing director of the Salt Lake City office of R&R Partners, an integrated marketing communications firm. “The One Show is indeed the one that is probably most coveted by professionals in our business.”
