Adolescent literacy focus of McKay School of Education conference in Salt Lake March 5-7

The Brigham Young University David O. McKay School of Education Alumni Board, inconjunction with the McKay School Center for the Improvement of TeacherEducation and Schooling, is sponsoring the first bi-annualliteracy conference titled, "The Literacy Promise — Opening Doors for theAdolescent Learner" Wednesday through Friday, March 5-7, at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

More than 900 Mountain West educators are scheduled to attend theconference.

Research indicates that adolescent students are challenged as they try tocomprehend materials they are expected to read to succeed in school. Thisconference will train educators on adolescent literacy issues and strategies.

Presenters are recognized educators andresearchers from across the nation and will present such topics as "The Adolescent Brain: AWork in Progress," "Redefining Literacy for the21st Century," "Creating Schools with aCommitment to Literacy: Steps and Tools that Support the Journey," "Adolescent Literacy: Fact,Fiction, and Future" and "Beating the Odds with All Students: Choosing Instructional Strategies thatMake a Difference."

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
