Brigham Young University's Department of Theatre and Media Arts will present the Microburst Theatre Festival, short plays written by BYU students, on March 5-7 and 11-14, at 7:30 p.m., with additional Saturday matinees at 2 p.m., in the Margetts Theatre of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in person at the BYU Ticket Office in the Harris Fine Arts Center or Marriott Center, by phone 801.422.2981 or online at byuarts.com.

The Microburst Theatre Festival will feature seven new short plays penned by BYU students. Returning to direct for a second year in a row, BYU Theatre and Media Arts Professor George Nelson led his students to three national awards at the 2014 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival with works that premiered at last year's Microburst Theatre Festival.

This year's plays will focus on themes of love, loss and life. Plays and playwrights featured include: The Piano Room by Lindsey Houseman, Playing Around by Sarah Stewart, Different But Equal by Andrew Justvig, A Death in the Family by Kristin Perkins, Memory Jar by Braquel Egginton, D&D and the Big Date by Daniel Fifield and Goodnight, Graham by Amanda Nelson.

"I am so proud of the writers and their willingness to hone their craft as they collaborate with these talented actors and the rest of the production staff," said Nelson. "I'm equally proud of the actors who have leapt at the chance to breathe the first breaths of life into these very compelling characters."

The cast includes Clayton Cranford, Cooper Sutton, Emily Lyons, Madison Dennis and Andrew Justvig.

The design and technical crew includes scenic and lighting designer Logan Hayden, costume designer Sarah Stewart, hair and makeup designer Marie Parker, properties designer Sara Myers, technical director Travis Coyne, stage manager Heather Richardson and dramaturgs Abram Yarbro and Holly Mancuso.
