Jamal Willis, assistant director of student wellness, spoke this morning at a BYU devotional, testifying of God's love and encouraging students to place their hope in Jesus Christ through life's challenges.
Willis acknowledged that today's world can feel chaotic and confusing, but taught that lasting hope comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
"We never give up on ourselves, we never give up on people, and especially never give up on God. Because He will never give up on you."
Willis centered his message on two truths: knowing and understanding who God is and His love for His children and recognizing that all people are God's children.
Reflecting on his parents' experiences growing up as Black Americans during segregation, Willis shared how they endured discrimination by relying on faith in God, family unity and hope in the goodness of people. He also spoke about serving in the Genesis Group, where the faith and perseverance of Black members of the Church strengthened his testimony.
Willis encouraged students to seek truth through the gospel of Jesus Christ rather than worldly influences. Sharing a personal experience from his youth, he described praying to God during a difficult time and feeling a peace that changed the course of his life, eventually leading him to BYU and later to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Using the story of David and Goliath, Willis taught that life's challenges can be overcome by trusting in God's strength rather than focusing on fear.
Turning to his second truth, Willis testified that everyone is a child of God. He recalled arriving at BYU as a nonmember and feeling like he didn't belong until Patty Edwards, the wife of head football coach LaVell Edwards, welcomed him into class, an experience that taught him the importance of helping others feel seen and loved.
Willis also reflected on the end of his football career after an injury ended his NFL dream. He said turning to God once again gave him hope and reminded him that he was never alone.
"I did not hear the fans cheering me on. But most importantly, I heard God — and the army of angels — cheering for me instead," Willis said.
Concluding his message, Willis testified that students have the opportunity to create a brighter future through Christlike service and faith.
"BYU students are hope givers because they serve, lead, inspire, and live with purpose and faith," Willis said.
