Mike Roberts, managing director of BYU Alumni and External Relations, delivered a devotional address at the Marriott Center, focusing his remarks on the importance of education and the enduring love of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
“I would like to remind all of us that God is our loving Father in Heaven and that He loves all His children perfectly, including you,” he said.
Roberts explained that God’s love is often expressed through people divinely placed in their lives such as mentors, leaders, family members and sometimes even strangers. These people can guide, teach and bless them in ways that sometimes isn't recognized until much later.
He explained that Church leaders have taught that education is about more than just a job or a degree. It is about developing the whole person, including the mind, spirit and character.
“As children of God, we believe we have the potential to become like Him, and this process of becoming includes the acquisition of knowledge, light and truth. Education is a vital component as we strive to reach our full potential.”
He went on to say, “The scriptures and modern prophets also consistently emphasize that seeking an education is a religious responsibility.”
Roberts recounted some of his life's journey that led not only to a meaningful career at BYU, but to a deeper understanding of God’s love, personal revelation and the divine role of education in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
One powerful example came through Robert's son Michael who was born with a life-threatening condition and later diagnosed with Down syndrome and autism.
“Michael is a great blessing to our family, and every day he teaches us about God’s love and helps us ‘think celestial.’”
Though nonverbal, Michael’s spirit teaches their family daily and his quiet strength and pure love are a reminder of the Savior’s gentle influence and the eternal bonds that families share.
Roberts reemphasized that throughout his life he has been reminded of God’s love for him and the importance and blessing of education.
“Whatever your journey may look like, a common thread that has guided you — all of us — here is the love of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. You are here for a divine purpose. You are in a place where people love you and want you to succeed,” Roberts testified.
