Discovering divine potential through dance, BYU student is set for the stages of NYC

When Kyla Balser took her first twirl on the dance floor at her local studio in Salem, Utah, she was only eight years old. Ever since that time, she dreamed of someday leaving her small town and six-acre farm to pursue a career as a professional dancer.

Years after her first twirl, Balser was introduced to contemporary dance while in high school, igniting a passion that would define her path.

Her real transformation began when she stepped into the world of Brigham Young University’s Contemporary Dance Theatre (CDT). At BYU, Balser found a community that not only nurtured her talent but also challenged her to explore the intersections between her faith and her art.

“As I have invited God into my creative process, I am able to feel His Spirit while dancing. I continually pray for guidance to enhance my skills and stay aware of my body’s movements. This connection has strengthened my faith and reminds me to be thankful for the gift of dance, which I can share with others."

Under the guidance of mentors like Keely Song, the CDT artistic director, Balser's vision expanded, and she began to see the boundless possibilities ahead of her.

"Keely taught me that my dreams aren’t just fantasies; they are within reach. She helped me see that there are no limits to what I can achieve," said Balser.

The transformative experiences offered by the BYU CDT took Balser beyond the confines of the dance studio and onto international stages, where she engaged with diverse communities and audiences, from local Church wards in Spain to African refugees in Paris and esteemed delegates in Brussels.

Reflecting on the profound personal impact of her travels abroad, Balser said, "I remember dancing for a group of children in Paris, hearing their laughter and seeing their wide-eyed wonder, and realizing it wasn’t just a performance; it was a moment of true connection."

Balsers involvement with the CDT has allowed her to regularly connect with renowned choreographers and dancers who guest taught and choreographed for the students.

“Interacting with guest choreographers gave me a glimpse into how vast and artistic the world of contemporary dance is. This, more than anything, widened my vision and pushed me to improve.”

The pinnacle of Balser’s dance career was being sought out by one of these guest artists, renowned choreographer Jesse Obremski, and being invited to join his competitive dance company in New York City for four weeks.

As Balser nears graduation from BYU, she recalls her childhood dream of someday becoming a professional dancer. Now, on the cusp of this milestone, she eagerly anticipates the chance to rehearse and perform with world-renowned artists, embracing the learning opportunities ahead with excitement.

"There's always room for growth, and while I'm proud of my achievements, there's something inspiring about knowing there's always more to learn. It ties into my belief as a child of God with infinite potential, reminding me to never limit myself."
