Forste’s appointment is effective August 1, 2021. A professor of sociology, Forste is currently the associate international vice president and director of the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies. The center’s international and area studies department offers six major and eight minor degree programs and provides international enrichment experiences for the campus community.

“Renata’s extensive administrative and international experience,” said Worthen, “coupled with her keen mind, academic accomplishments and caring leadership style will be a blessing not only to the areas she supervises but also to the entire campus.”

In her two decades on the President’s Council, Rogers has guided BYU’s international programs as they have flourished and expanded. “There are few people who have had as broad an impact on BYU in the last 20 years,” said Worthen. “During that time, Sandi has not only led our international programs, she has also directed the Division of Continuing Education in its extensive work, including the creation and expansion of BYU Online. And beyond those significant responsibilities, Sandi has been an invaluable member of the President’s Council whose extraordinary wisdom and judgment has left a positive mark on so many endeavors both on campus and throughout the world.”

As the director of the Kennedy Center, Forste has improved curricula and international experiences for students and fostered interdisciplinary cooperation on important international issues and concerns.

She has served as chair of the Department of Sociology, associate dean in the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences and coordinator of Latin American studies and Global Women’s studies. Her research has focused on population studies, family research internationally and maternal and child health. She has published widely in national and international journals.

Forste taught for three years at Western Washington University before joining the faculty at BYU in 1995. She received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from BYU and a doctoral degree in sociology from the University of Chicago, with emphases in demography and statistics.
