“Matt is a seasoned leader and brings over 25 years of experience in construction and physical facilities. He has a strong knowledge of all aspects of the BYU campus and an enduring love for BYU,” Hafen said.

Giles has been at BYU since 2015 and has served as the managing director of buildings, grounds and transportation services for the past several years. Prior to joining BYU, Giles spent several years managing major construction and facility-related projects.

Giles earned an undergraduate degree from BYU's Construction Management program and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Utah.

Effective April 1, Giles will replace Ole Smith who is retiring from BYU after 19 plus years as the AVP of physical facilities. Ole also worked for many years as an employee for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before joining BYU. Smith oversaw many major projects at BYU including the Heritage Halls housing project, a new Life Sciences Building, a new Music Building and many other key campus projects.

"Ole has been a loyal and outstanding employee at BYU for a very long time. We will miss Ole and wish him the best as he begins a new and exciting phase of his life in retirement,” Hafen said.
