BYU today announced the hiring of Matthew G. Andrus as the new Chief of the BYU Police Department, effective immediately.

Chief Andrus replaces former police chief Chris Autry, who was recently appointed to a new position at BYU as Managing Director of BYU Police and BYU Security.

“Chief Andrus has the intelligence, ability, confidence, humility, dedication, loyalty and desire to manage well the situations he will face,” Autry said. “He has my full support as he takes on the significant level of responsibility that comes with this new role.”

Andrus has more than 24 years of experience in law enforcement. He has served in more than a dozen capacities for BYU Police since 1996, including patrol, traffic and parking, building security and the investigative detectives unit. Over his career he has advanced from officer to corporal to sergeant to lieutenant.

He has also served on the Orem/Provo/BYU Metro SWAT Team for 13 years and has been an instructor with the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in Salt Lake City. He most recently served as a women’s self-defense RAD instructor and a firearms instructor for BYU Police.
