BYU professor to discuss "Is the Universe Infinite" June 2

First lecture in series honoring International Year of Astronomy

J. Ward Moody, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University, will discuss "Is the Universe Infinite?" during a free lecture Tuesday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium.

His lecture is the first in a series to be hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy on the first Tuesday of every month as part of the International Year of Astronomy.

Weather and twilight permitting, the telescopes on top of the Eyring Science Center will be open after the lectures until 10 p.m. for viewing. The public is welcome to attend.

“One of the greatest mysteries of the universe is its size,” said Moody. “When you gaze upward space seems to go on forever. But does it? Can the expanse extend infinitely without a boundary? I will talk about the possibilities for boundaries and conjecture on whether the universe is indeed infinite or not.”

BYU professor Matt Seeley created the Strong Youth Project after watching all five of his children participate in youth sports. While he loves the many invaluable benefits of youth sports, he laments that his children often miss family activities for practice or face pressures to compete in sports during the offseason. These concerns have fueled his collaboration with professors from disciplines across BYU’s campus to improve organized sport experiences for youth, parents and coaches.
