Wheatley lecture to feature Oxford Christian apologist Oct. 17

Richard G. Swinburne to discuss “The Implausibility of Physical Determinism”

Richard G. Swinburne, emeritus Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion Department at the University of Oxford and a fellow of the British Academy, will present a Brigham Young University Wheatley Forum address Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m., in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium on the first level.

His presentation is hosted by the Wheatley Institution and his lecture is titled, “The Implausibility of Physical Determinism.” Admission is free and open to the public.

Swinburne is best known for his work in the philosophy of religion. He is one of the foremost rational Christian apologists, arguing that faith in Christianity is rational and coherent in a rigorous philosophical sense. He joined the Orthodox Church in 1995.

He has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics (with first class honors) and also a bachelor of philosophy degree, both from Oxford.

The Wheatley Institution was founded in 2007 to enhance the academic climate and scholarly reputation of BYU and to enrich faculty and student experiences by contributing recognized scholarship that lifts society by preserving and strengthening its core institutions.
