Second annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture Feb. 9 to examine "Fragile Families"

Featuring Sara S. McLanahan of Princeton

The College of Family, Home and Social Sciences at Brigham Young University will sponsor the second annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium.

Sara S. McLanahan, professor of sociology and public affairs from Princeton University, will speak on “Fragile Families: Myths and Realities.” Admission is free and the public is welcome. A reception will follow the lecture.

McLanahan is the founder and director of the Bendheim-Thoman Center for Research on Child Wellbeing, and she serves as editor-in-chief of “The Future of Children,” a journal dedicated to providing research and analysis to promote effective policies and programs for children.

She also serves on the advisory board for the National Poverty Center, the board of trustees of the William T. Grant Foundation and the selection committee for the William T. Grant Young Scholars Award.

The lecture is part of the Marjorie Pay Hinckley Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences. Other components include funds for mentored-learning projects for students, research conferences, visiting scholars and outreach efforts in the community.

The focus of the chair reflects Sister Hinckley's concern for strengthening families, encouraging the development of women, fostering better parenting and helping children.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

November 04, 2025
BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
