John Hoffmann featured at May 8 BYU devotional

John Hoffmann, a professor in the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, will give an address titled “Prophet, Priest and King ” at the weekly Brigham Young University devotional Tuesday, May 8, at 11:05 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

It will be broadcast live on KBYU-TV (Channel 11), BYUtv, KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU-Radio and at byutv.org, as well as on campus in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium and the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center. For rebroadcast and reprint information, visit byutv.org or speeches.byu.edu.

Hoffmann is a professor of sociology who teaches courses on social statistics for master’s degree-level students, linear regression analysis and intermediate statistics. His areas of research address the etiology and consequence of drug use, theories of delinquency, mental health problems and the influence of religious affiliation and practices on behaviors and attitudes.

Before arriving at BYU in 1999, he worked as a senior research scientist at the National Opinion Research Center, a nonprofit firm affiliated with the University of Chicago.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in political science at James Madison University, Hoffmann went on to earn a master’s degree in justice studies at American University in Washington, D.C., a doctoral degree in criminal justice at SUNY-Albany and a master’s degree in public health from at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Ga.
