Jack and Mary Lois Wheatley honored by national organization

Two longtime supporters of Brigham Young University are among six exemplary individuals honored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education with its 2012 Distinguished Service Awards.

Jack R. and Mary Lois Wheatley were recipients of the CASE Distinguished Friend of Education Award. This citation honors individuals whose volunteer service has helped advance education at an educational institution, even though he or she is not a graduate of that institution.

The Wheatleys made their first gift to BYU nearly 40 years ago in support of an academic chair. Since then, they have played a significant role in various academic, cultural, building and beautification projects that have benefited thousands of students and campus visitors.

This includes purchasing thousands of trees for the BYU campus, financing and helping design one of the most popular campus art museums in the western part of the United States and providing financial support for BYU students to spend a semester studying in Jerusalem.

In 2008, the Wheatleys founded the Wheatley Institution at BYU to enhance the university's scholarship and academic experience. Jack Wheatley has also served as co-chair of the BYU President’s Leadership Council, co-chair of the institution’s “Lighting the Way for the 21st Century” capital campaign and has devoted hundreds of hours to help conceptualize and plan numerous buildings on campus.

CASE recognized the Wheatleys along with the other honorees at a luncheon last month in conjunction with the CASE Summit for Leaders in Advancement in Washington, D.C.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with offices in London, Singapore and Mexico City, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education is the professional organization for advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, fundraising, marketing and other areas.
