Ignacio M. Garcia named to BYU history chair

Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr. Chair in Western American History

David B. Magleby, dean of the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, announced the appointment of Ignacio M. Garcia to the Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr. Chair in Western American History at Brigham Young University.

The three-year term became effective July 1.

“The Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr. Chair has a long legacy of outstanding scholarship and student mentoring. Professor Garcia will continue that legacy,” said Rulon Pope, associate dean of the college. “He is a very accomplished and visible scholar of Western American History and one of the leading scholars of Latino history in the country.”

Garcia, a professor in history, has taught at BYU since 1995. Prior to his work in Provo, he taught at Texas A&M University and the University of Arizona. He has written commissioned essays and four books, including “Viva Kennedy: Mexican Americans in Search of Camelot,” which won the Coral H. Tullis Award from the Texas State Historical Association.

He holds both a master’s degree and a doctorate in history from the University of Arizona.

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
