Eric Fielding to give Distinguished Faculty Lecture Jan. 30

Eric Fielding will deliver this year's Brigham Young University College of Fine Arts and Communications Distinguished Faculty Lecture Thursday (Jan. 30) at 11 a.m. in the Pardoe Drama Theatre of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Fielding, the former chair of the BYU Theatre and Media Arts Department and resident scenic designer for BYU theatre, will discuss "A World of Creation: International Stage Design and the Creative Process."

The public is welcome to attend.

A BYU alumnus, Fielding received an MFA degree from the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago and joined the BYU faculty in 1976. He has also served on the theatre faculties at the Goodman School of Drama, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Utah.

Fielding has completed more than 200 scenic designs for productions at BYU, the Utah Opera Company, the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company, Pioneer Theatre Company, Sundance Theatre and other national theatres, as well as designs for the Hill Cumorah and Oakland pageants for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He has been significantly involved in international theatre for the past 25 years. He served as designer for the American exhibitions at the 1991 and 1995 Prague Quadrennials, a major international exhibition of theatrical scenic and costume design, winning a gold medal in 1991 for "Mozart in America."

Fielding has been a member of and delegate to the International Organization of Scenographers, Technicians and Architects of Theatre, serving as chair of its publications committee for many years.

A fellow, former vice president and long-time board member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Fielding served for seven years as editor of USITT publications-including the Theatre Design & Technology and Sightlines-and received that organization's Founders Award in 1992.
