BYU's School of Music offers free performances Dec. 6-8

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present several free concerts Tuesday through Thursday, Dec. 6-8, featuring various instrumental and choral groups.

The BYU Trombone Choir, conducted by Will Kimball, will perform Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in 151 Tanner Building. Selections include “Festliche Gröffnungsmusik” by Arno Hermann, “Layla” by Eric Clapton arranged by Eric Crees, the Fugue in G Minor by J.S. Bach arranged by Ralph Sauer and “Adagio” by Edward Grieg.

Woodwind students will present Woodwind Chamber Night Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections include the Trio for Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano by William Hulstone, the Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano by Madeleine Dring and “Roaring Fork” by Eric Ewazen.

The University Orchestra and University Strings will perform Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Conducted by Brandon Matthews, the University Strings will present selections by Vivaldi, Walton and Mendelssohn, while the University Orchestra, conducted by Kayson Brown, will present pieces by Saint-Saens and Beethoven.

The Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Eric Hansen, will perform classical favorites Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Selections include “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens, the Symphony No. 92 in G Major, "Oxford," by Franz Joseph Haydn and the Overture to "The Gypsy Baron" by Johann Strauss Jr.

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mark Ammons, will present “We Be Jammin’” Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Featuring guest artist Steve Call on euphonium and tuba, the group will perform various jazz selections such as “We Be Jammin’” by Frank Foster, “Jalapeño Dreams” by Denis DiBlasio, “Los Hermanos De Bop” by Mark Taylor and “Intimacy of the Blues” by Billy Strayhorn arranged by Tommy Newsom.

The University Chorale, conducted by Paul Broomhead, Timothy Workman and Carric Smolnik, will perform Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Selections include holiday favorites such as “O Little Town of Bethlehem” by Thomas L. Durham, “Children's Song of the Nativity” arranged by Alf S. Houkom and “Good People All, This Christmastime” by Frank Ferko.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
