BYU Young DanceMakers present "Childscapes" May 7-8

The Young DanceMakers will present "An Evening of Dance" Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall on the Brigham Young University campus.

Tickets are $6 for the event and the public is invited to attend. To purchase tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322.

This year's presentation, "Childscapes: The Landscape of Childhood," is a visually exciting dance exploration of the landscape created in a child's world of imagination and adventure, according to Kathleen Sheffield of the BYU children's dance faculty.

Pieces include dancing undersea with jellyfish and coral, celebrating earth and sky through the beauty of the sun, stars, clouds and rainbows, bicycle rides, a country hoedown, playground fun, camping in the mountains and slumber parties.

The performance will showcase original choreography featuring the children's ideas and movements, Sheffield said.

The Young DanceMakers is the performing company of BYU's Children and Teens' Creative Dance Program and includes boys and girls ages 6 to 18 who have studied and achieved a high level of performance within the BYU Children and Teens' Creative Dance Program.

Performing with Young DanceMakers will be the BYU Kinnect Dance Company, directed by Marilyn Berrett of BYU's Department of Dance.

Former director R. Christine Ollerton will also be honored for more than 30 years of service in directing the BYU Children's Dance Program. Her choreography will be featured as a part of "ChildScapes" and a reception will be held in her honor following the Saturday performance.

For more information about the performances, call Kathleen Sheffield at (801) 422-2043.
