BYU Spanish professor to be honored at international fair in Dominican Republic

As part of the eighth annual International Book Fair in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a Brigham Young University professor will be honored for his contributions to Hispanic culture on April 24.

Orlando Alba, professor of Hispanic linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, is being celebrated for his work as a scholar and author.

One day of this ten-day event will be dedicated in his honor. The "Orlando Alba Day" will feature activities that highlight his career and work.

Alba studied philosophy at the Seminario Pontificio Santo Tomas de Aquino in Santo Domingo and theology at the University Laval in Quebec. He completed a master's degree in linguistics at Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, and a doctorate degree in Hispanic philology in Madrid.

For 17 years he was a professor in the Philosophy and Letters Department at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic, where he served as director of the Philosophy and Letters Department.

Alba became a member of the Association of Linguistics and Philology of Latin America in 1976 and was the Dominican Republic's delegate for that organization. He also later became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic. He is a member of the Dominican Association of Fulbright fellows as well.
