BYU offers free tax preparation service

Students, faculty and staff at Brigham Young University can receive free on-campus income tax preparation assistance through March 26, a service that is also available to local community members who earned below $35,000 in 2003.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will be open weekdays from Feb. 2 through March 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in 316 Tanner Building on the BYU campus. The office will close Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon for devotionals and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon.

The VITA program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and Beta Alpha Psi, an on-campus fraternity of accounting, finance and information system students.

Participants wishing to receive tax filing help must bring the following (if applicable):

  • All W-2(s) for each employer (job)

  • 1098-T (if you paid tuition, provided by your University)

  • All 1099 forms (if you had any), such as: —1099 INT bank interest or dividend (or substitute form).

    —1099 INT interest on US savings bonds (EE and HH bonds).

    —1099 DIV capital gains or dividends distribution SSA

    —1099 MISC miscellaneous income (i.e., independent contractors).

  • Names, social security numbers and birth dates for each adult and child. If you were divorced during the year and changed your name, you must make the change with Social Security.

  • Name, address, and federal identification number or SSN of business or person providing day care services.

  • Records of any alimony received or paid (must provide name and SSN of ex-spouse). If you have a copy of last year’s return, please bring it as well. Please note that complex returns and returns for businesses will not be prepared.

    Although taxes are not due until April 15, please note that the VITA office will be closed after March 26. Come early in February to avoid long lines in March.

    BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

    BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
