Featuring nearly 2,000 student poster presentations
The Integrative Biology Department at Brigham Young University will host its Biology 100 Symposium on Monday and Tuesday, April 11-12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Wilkinson Center Garden Court.
Nearly 2,000 students will present posters on the theme, "Sustainable Resources." Subtopics include nature as a source of pharmaceuticals, sustainable agriculture, marine environments and issues and concerns with renewable resources in agriculture.
"This symposium addresses society-related issues and concerns that we pose to the sustainability of natural resources of the earth," says Rex Cates, a BYU professor of integrated biology who teaches Biology 100 with Larry St. Clair. "These natural resources provide innumerable services to mankind. They should be utilized in ways which they are not overexploited."
The student presentations cover societal issues that fall into four subtopics:
Nature as a source of pharmaceuticals, including angiosperms, fungi, gymnosperms and marine organisms.
Sustainable agriculture, which involves genetically modified foods, organic farming, cropping systems and overgrazing.
Marine environments that entail fisheries, aquaculture, estuarine health and endangered species.
Issues and concerns with renewable resources in agriculture such as soil, water and air pollutants. The symposium is free and the public is welcome to walk in anytime to review the posters and ask the students questions.
