Using the example of the BYU football team, Athletic Director Tom Holmoe spoke to students about brotherly love at Tuesday's devotional.
BYU Television and KBYU-TV will broadcast the devotional again on Sunday, Dec. 10. For times, please see byubroadcasting.org.
Holmoe counseled students to love and serve one another, especially at BYU, where it may feel difficult to make a difference in the lives of others. "We must learn to reach out to those we don't know: to the discarded, the sick, those less fortunate, the afflicted, the lonely, and those we don't necessarily understand."
Reminding students that we are all "our brother's keeper," Holmoe taught that we can all make a small difference. "God works miracles in the lives of his children through the Christ-like service rendered by their brothers and sisters," he said. "A warm smile, a friendly greeting, a door held open, and a good deed, however simple it may be, can turn a bad day into a good one."
An example of loving and serving one another, Holmoe said, is BYU's own football team. "This 'Band of Brothers' strives toward holding each other accountable for the good of the whole. Selfish motives are shelved in place of team objectives . . . When one falters, all are affected. When one succeeds, all benefit!"
Holmoe encouraged students to "serve our Lord by being actively engaged in blessing the lives of all our brothers and sisters and being an instrument in the hands of our Heavenly Father."
