At the Museum of Art:

A major new exhibition titled "Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World: Egypt, Greece, Rome" will run until June 4, 2005, at the BYU Museum of Art. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for students and $18 for families of up to six people. Admission is free for children 5 years old and younger and BYU students and employees. The 204 works displayed in the exhibition span a period from predynastic times in Egypt, 6000 years ago, to the Roman late imperial period, about A.D. 350. The exhibition is from the renowned collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Free exhibits now on display at the museum include:

  • "150 Years of American Painting," a permanent collection of paintings by renowned artists such as Frederic Edwin Church, Maynard Dixon, John Singer Sargent and many local Utah favorites including Mahonri Young. The exhibit will be displayed until June 2005.

  • "Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda" by Carl Bloch, part of the museum's permanent collection, is on display in the main lobby area.

  • Every Monday night in the Museum of Art auditorium there will be storytelling for all ages. The Artful Tales program is free and offers two 35-minute presentations at 7 and 8 p.m. The 7 p.m. presentation is geared toward families from the community and the 8 p.m. presentation is geared toward university students. The goal of this program is to help people develop a better connection with and understanding of Greek beliefs. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.     BYU Jazz Voices and Vocal Jazz will perform at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Kelly Eisenhour will direct, and admission is free.

    Tuesday, April 5

    The jazz band Synthesis with Ray Smith directing will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are $9 with $3 off with a BYU or student ID. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.

    Wednesday, April 6

    The BYU Flute Choirs will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Thursday, April 7

    The BYU University Band with Fred McInnis conducting will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Admission is free.

    Thursday, April 7

    Jazz Combos will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Friday, April 8

    The BYU Singers under the direction of Ronald Staheli will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are $9 with $3 off with a BYU or student ID. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.

    Friday, April 8

    A studio piano recital will be held featuring the students of Scott Holden at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Friday through Saturday, April 8-9

    "Ballroom in Concert" will be performed at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance Saturday at 2 p.m., in the Marriott Center. Lee Wakefield is the artistic director. Style and elegance are hallmarks of the BYU Ballroom Dance Company, considered one of the best formation ballroom dance teams in the world. Colorful costumes and pulse-pounding music complete the stunning visual treat. Tickets are $10. For ticket on-sale date and availability, call the Marriott Center Ticket Office at (801) 422-2981.

    Saturday, April 9

    A student cello ensemble will perform at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    The University Chorale under the direction of Paul Broomhead will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Admission is free.

    Wednesday, April 27

    Guest artist Ricardo Paz will perform the guitar at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Making fashion out of art: Students hit the runway with designs inspired by BYU Museum of Art exhibit

    BYU students recently showcased fashion and makeup designs in a runway show at the Museum of Art. They each designed and modeled a look inspired by one of the paintings on exhibit from an art museum in Puerto Rico. On display until Jan. 3, The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce showcases world-class art that reflects the innate beauty of the human experience.

    A Farmer's Field of Dreams? BYU-built smart tech maps moisture levels, will adjust watering automatically

    The team of BYU engineers placed 86 Bluetooth devices throughout a 50-hectare field near Elberta, Utah, to measure water levels across every inch of the field. Placing this many sensors in a commercial field is unprecedented and allows researchers to see unique patterns that have never before been captured.
