Annual Shallit Lecture at BYU Jan. 25 to consider “The Dawn of Mayan Civilization”

The Department of Anthropology from Brigham Young University will sponsor the annual Grace Elizabeth Shallit Memorial Lecture Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 3-5 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Varsity Theater.

Michael Coe from Yale University will deliver the lecture, “The Dawn of Mayan Civilization.”

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

One of the most distinguished scholars to study ancient Mesoamerica, Coe has devoted decades to understanding the Olmec, the founding civilization of Mesoamerica. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard University and has authored numerous books, monographs and articles.

Coe spent much of his academic life as a professor of anthropology at Yale University, retiring at the rank of Charles J. MacCurdy Professor. He has received many awards, including the Tatiana Proskouriakoff Award from Harvard University, election to the National Academy of Sciences and, most recently, the Order of the Quetzal, Guatemala's highest honor.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
