Brigham Young University Academic Vice President Justin Collings announced today that Tim McLain will be the next dean of the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering.
McLain will start on July 1. He replaces Michael Jensen who has served as dean since 2016.
“Soft-spoken and kind, Tim’s mission alignment is exact, his scholarly credentials are superb, and his leadership experience is rich. His devotion to the gospel and to the BYU mission is exemplary,” Collings said. “In my view, the College of Engineering has great positive momentum, and Tim has helped generate that momentum as a very able associate dean. I am confident that he will sustain that momentum as dean.”
McLain, currently an associate dean, has been a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BYU since 1995. His research focuses on navigation and control of unmanned aircraft systems (drones).
Prior to joining the BYU faculty, he worked at the Aerospace Robotics Laboratory at Stanford University and for Sarcos Research Corp. in Salt Lake City. Since joining BYU, he has been a visiting scholar at the Air Force Research Laboratory.
He earned a PhD from Stanford University, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees from BYU, all in mechanical engineering.
“Mike Jensen has been a marvelous steward of the college and has helped move it forward in every aspect of its mission,” Collings said. “I am immensely grateful to him for his leadership and his friendship. I am sad to see his tenure end but excited for him to return to his department and to continue to bless the university and its students.”
The BYU Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering has more than 4,400 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in nine different engineering and technology programs across five academic departments.
