Name: Brent Slife

BYU employee since: 1994

My job at BYU is… I am a psychotherapist and philosopher of psychology. I have a private practice in which I see mostly problem marriages. My scholarship looks at the conceptual underpinnings of psychotherapy.

Currently I’m working on… a book in which I claim that values and morality aren't just individual preferences or cultural constructions but have a kind of meaningful reality of their own. These claims are then explored in psychotherapy.

I get most excited about my work when… I'm exploring a new idea, especially if it might help my future therapy clients.

Christianity changed the way I view my discipline… because God doesn't typically matter in psychology.

My advice to graduating seniors is… Discern your Call (with a capital C), which means find the thing you have the talent, fit and, especially, passion for.

When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… always thinking.

My most cherished memory at BYU was when… cherished memories occur when a student wants to discuss ideas in psychology.

The best-kept BYU secret is… the BYU faculty because they aren't just outstanding teachers but also outstanding scholars.

My go-to comfort food is… cinnamon rolls

You’ll never find me without… the latest iPhone.

I’m most looking forward to… seeing my grandchildren again

My favorite quote is… "It's not about you" (Rick Warner, The Purpose-Driven Life)

My favorite TV show growing up was… “The Wild, Wild West” (way too long ago for students to know)

One item on my bucket list is… finally getting some time to hike around Zion National Park.
