Name: Will Terris
BYU Employee since... May 11, 1981
My job at BYU is… Gardening Maintenance Manager. I manage 4 gardening supervisors, 8 gardening specialists, and 1 events supervisor. We have gardening areas that cover the Provo Temple, MTC, and all of campus. During the summer, we mow lawns, edge the sidewalks, weed and plant flowers. In the winter, we remove snow from sidewalks, landings and stairs. Our goal is to keep campus neat, clean and beautiful, but most of all safe!
I get most excited about my work when… I’m out, side-by-side with the students helping shoveling snow or teaching them how to run equipment.
Students don’t think I notice… that we have a great student body that takes pride in the way their campus looks. If it wasn’t for the student employee help, we wouldn’t be able to keep campus looking the way it does. They work very hard and take ownership of the area they work in.
When I have 30 minutes of free-time, you can find me… thinking of new songs my classic rock band should play. I’m in a band called Fire At Will. We’ve been together for three years and we’re having a blast! Just some old guys having a good time making music.
My advice to incoming freshman is… don’t be all serious, take time to smell the roses and enjoy the moment because it goes by so fast.
My advice to graduating seniors is… like they say at Lagoon, “Hold On And Have Fun!”
My go-to BYU Creamery ice cream flavor is… mint chocolate chip.
My favorite spot on campus is… The south stream and trail because… it feels like you’re in the mountains.
You’ll never find me without… my glasses, I’ve worn them since I was 15 months old.
The title of my autobiography would be… Make Them Smile!
My favorite quote is… "We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses." –Abraham Lincoln
If I could travel anywhere, I would go to… Scotland because… that’s where my parents were raised.
