For those who are unable to attend, the event will be live streamed at liveconcerts.byu.edu.
This performance is an annual event that will feature the best junior, senior and graduate students in the School of Music.
“This is always an exciting evening to see the astounding level of skill our students have,” director Kory Katseanes said.
Megumi Terry is a member of the BYU Philharmonic and will be a soloist in the Evening of Concertos.
“Kory really pushes us with demanding repertoire and, although it can be challenging at times, the reward is always worth the hours of practice and rehearsals,” Terry said. “I really appreciate him consistently holding us to a high standard of playing and helping us understand what it's like to play on a professional level.”
One piece the orchestra will perform is Violin Concerto in D major by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Korngold was an influential film composer in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s. Terry said Korngold’s Hollywood influence reflects in his concerto, as the score is rich in texture and melodies.
The Philharmonic is the flagship orchestra of the five orchestras in the BYU School of Music. Led by professor Kory Katseanes, the orchestra is comprised of approximately 100 of BYU’s finest student musicians, who come from all over the world to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees in music.
Continuing a great tradition of excellence developed over many years of outstanding performances, the orchestra performs 10 to 14 concerts each year. They also collaborate often with BYU’s celebrated opera and choral departments.
Consisting almost exclusively of music majors, this widely-acclaimed group is known for its energetic and exciting performances of the masterpieces of orchestral repertoire. Choosing from every musical period, Philharmonic concerts are showcases for the most inspiring and thrilling achievements of the world’s greatest composers.
