NYT reporter Larry Rohter to discuss Brazil at BYU lecture Feb. 9

Larry Rohter, the author of “Brazil on the Rise: The Story of a Country Transformed” and a culture reporter for The New York Times, will address Brigham Young University students and faculty Thursday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium.

“Brazil on the Rise” is the current Book-of-the-Semester for BYU’s David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

Rohter has been the go-to journalist for over a decade on Brazil, where he lived for 14 years, first as a Newsweek correspondent and later as The New York Times bureau chief for the Rio de Janeiro office.

Two decades ago Brazil had an enormous national debt, but today it is the world's eighth largest economy, poised to overtake France. In his richly narrated and textured look at the country today, Rohter provides an authoritative account of the culture and politics of a country that endlessly fascinates Americans.
