BYU music student wins 'student Emmy' for music

BYU music student Richard Williams has won the "student Emmy" for music composition for his ragtag piano and Dixieland jazz score on the BYU Center for Animation film, Mashed.

“I was relieved and happy to win,” said Williams, a senior from Salinas, Calif. “I didn’t want all that work to go for nothing. I always thought it had a pretty good chance.”

Mashed is a 5-minute film about a mashed-potato-machine maker featuring the work of animation student Anthony Holden. Williams ended up working on the film after meeting Holden in a Japanese class.

The music composition student Emmy was one of four student Emmys awarded to BYU student film projects Saturday at the College Television Awards ceremony in California. The live action student film Inspector 42 won best drama and best director and the BYU Center for Animation film X-ing took home a third-place student Emmy in the animation category.
